The Black Educator Apprenticeship Program (BEAP) was developed in 2022 and launched its first cohort in April 2023. We developed BEAP to tackle the persistent diversity gap in education. Our goal is to cultivate a new generation of Black educators.
This initiative stems from a clear need identified by both aspiring Black teachers and current Black educators in the field. Many similar successful models also exist in the United States. Our approach leverages their best practices, adapted to a Canadian environment. By providing a supportive pathway and addressing the specific challenges Black educators face, we aim to significantly grow the pipeline of talented Black teachers who will inspire and empower future generations of students.
BEAP is developed and run by Youth Empowering Parents, a charity that specializes in turning young people into educators
Youth Empowering Parents (YEP) is a United Nations Innovation Award winning charity with a mission of transforming young people from ‘educated’ to ‘educator.’ We work with young people Grades 4-12, primarily from low-income and BIPOC communities, and put them in the role of 1-on-1 teacher for an adult or senior from their community. They teach technology, English language, math, financial literacy, musical instruments, physical exercise, or any other skill they have an interest in teaching, and which an adult or senior has an interest in learning. Youth alumni also get the opportunity to run their own YEP programs in their own communities, taking on a coordination and facilitation role.
In our programs, youth build essential 21st century skills such as communication and leadership, while also acquiring volunteer hours they need to graduate high-school. Adults and seniors receive private tutoring for free, a service that otherwise costs about $20 per hour.
YEP programs have been replicated in over 100 locations across 5 countries, reaching tens of thousands.
