Classroom Management: how to create a positive and productive learning environment, handle classroom disruptions, and build rapport with students.
Curriculum Development & Student Assessment: methods to design lessons that align to curriculum standards, various assessment methods, and how to use assessment to inform instruction.
Diversity and Inclusion: learning about diversity in the classroom and how to build an environment that is inclusive for all students, cultural competency, differentiation strategies, and supporting students with special needs.
Practical Experience: hands-on experience in one-on-one, small group, and full classroom environments.
Development of Teaching Skills: teacher mentors support youth and give them feedback on their teaching skills, lesson delivery, classroom management, and student engagement.
Building Confidence: stepping into the role of a teacher can be nerve-wracking, and youth are given guidance and support to gain confidence and become comfortable in front of a classroom.
Identifying Strengths and Weaknesses: this experience allows youth to identify areas where they excel and areas that need further development.
Seeing Themselves as Teachers: classroom experience lets youth see themselves as successful, and capable to become a teacher.
Black Role Models: Black teachers serve as powerful role models, demonstrating that success in education is attainable for Black youth. This boosts self-confidence and a sense of belonging in this career.
Ongoing Mentorship: Black teacher mentors support Black youth with professional development, and helping them navigate potential roadblocks in the field.
Campus Tours: visits to University campuses offer youth a glimpse into student life, campus culture, and support services that are available. They also help youth feel more comfortable in this environment.
Collectively, our team has trained over 5,000 people to become amazing elementary and high school teachers. We've taught at York University, University of Toronto, and several US universities (e.g. UConn, Drake University), and held prominent roles within the Ontario Ministry of Education.
We operate the Black Educator Apprenticeship program in 5 locations across Toronto. The program begins in September each year and ends in August.
